There are many problems that can arise during the process of child birth which, if not handled properly by the attending doctors and nurses, can result in serious birth injuries. There are many examples of problems that can occur during child birth such as:
Oxygen Deprivation: This can be the cause of one of the most serious types of birth injuries, one that affects the brain. Oxygen deprivation is commonly caused by the umbilical cord being twisted or compressed in the birthing process.
Bleeding within the skull or Brain: Birth injuries like these can have greatly differing degrees of severity. They could lead to long term disorders such as seizures, mental retardation, or cerebral palsy.
Mechanical Trauma: Mechanical Trauma. This can occur when the baby is too large to fit properly through the birth canal or when the baby is in a position other than head first during the birthing process. Often, babies will have neck and shoulder injuries due to mechanical trauma. Neck and spinal injuries can affect the entire body and spinal injuries or vertebral subluxation complex, can be a lifelong problem if not immediately taken care of.

Shoulder Dystocia: This can occur when a child's shoulders
will not pass through a mother's pelvis during birth. Complicated
maneuvers must be used in order to get the baby to pass through
the pelvis, often resulting in shoulder injuries or shoulder
dystocia. Some injuries associated with shoulder dystocia
are, fractures of the calvicle or humerus, asphyxia, nerve injuries,
brachial plexus injuries (one of the most common birth injuries),
or death. One maneuver the doctor may use to dislodge the
baby's shoulder is to use traction on the baby's
head to help it safely pass through the birth canal. When
a doctor uses traction and the baby's shoulder remains
stuck the brachial plexus nerves in the baby's neck may
stretch or tear, possibly causing serious injury. One severe
result that can come of this is brachial plexus palsy (also known
as Erb's Palsy).
