Erbs Palsy

Erb's Palsy is a type of Brachial Plexus injury of the upper brachial plexus, affecting muscles around the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Erb's Palsy is characterized by a lack of movement in a child's arm and shoulder.

As many as 60% of people with brachial plexus injuries are affected with the Erb's Palsy type. Erbs Palsy occurs in about 1 or 2 babies in 1,000 at birth. The symptoms of Erbs Palsy injury include a limp or paralyzed arm and/or lack of muscle control in the arm or hand. Many doctors believe Erb's Palsy should never occur. It is for that reason you should contact us if you have a child diagnosed with Erbs Palsy.

Although an Erbs Palsy injury can occur at any time, most injuries happen during birth. The birth injury occurs when the delivering physician exerts excessive force on the baby's head and neck during a vaginal birth. An Erb's Palsy injury can occur during the child birth process as a result of the compression of the brachial plexus nerves that control portions of arm function. The resulting damage leaves the child with little or no movement in the arm, hand or fingers. Additionally, strength and size of the arm may be affected.

Your child's disability depends on which nerves are injured and how severely they have been damaged. Children with Erb's Palsy have only limited use of the affected arm. Often they develop arm length discrepancies as they grow. They can require ongoing physical therapy, and, in some cases surgery.

If you or someone you know has suffered due to a birth injury you may be entitled to legal compensation. A Birth Injury Attorney For You is here to provide information and to put you in contact with a Birth Injury Attorney who may provide further valuable legal assistance.
