at will employment - The right of employers to fire employees for any reason or for no reason at all. It also gives employees the legal right to quit their jobs at any time for any reason. Employees with contracts stating the terms of their employment are usually not considered to be at will employees. Regardless of an employer's rights to fire at will employees, they cannot fire someone for illegal reasons such as age or race.
defined benefit plan - A pension plan where the benefit payment is a definite, preset amount which may be based on length of service or calculated as a percentage of salary over the years.
dependents benefits - A certain Social Security benefit which may be available to the spouse and minor or disabled children of retired or disabled workers who qualify for retirement or disability benefits.
disability benefits - Social Security benefit available to people under 65 who meet the program's medical requirements and who qualify because of their work and earning record.
Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) - Pension law passed by the federal government to protect pension rights. The law sets minimum standards for pension plans, guaranteeing that pension rights cannot be unfairly denied to or taken from a worker, provides some protection for workers in the event certain types of pension plans cannot pay the benefits to which workers are entitled, and requires that employers provide full and clear information about employees' pension rights, including the way pension benefits accumulate, how the company invests pension funds, and when and how pension benefits can be collected.
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) - Federal agency responsible for workplace discrimination complaints. The Commission was created in 1964 by the Civil Rights Act to administer and enforce prohibitions against discrimination in the workplace.
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) - Federal law guaranteeing worker's minimum right i.e. 40
Grievance - In labor law a complaint filed by and employee regarding working conditions to be resolved by procedural machinery provided in the union contract. An injury, injustice, or wrong which gives ground for complaint.
National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) - A federal agency which prevents and remedies unfair labor practices by employers and labor organizations.
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) - Federal law that established safety standards in the workplace.
Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission - The agency established by OSHA to adjudicate enforcement actions under the Act.
severance pay - An amount that an employer offers to employees who are laid off.
sexual harassment - Unwanted sexual advances or behavior on the job that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment.
Social Security - a system of federal old-age pension for employed persons begun 1935. A portion of the payment is deducted from the employee's salary and an equal portion is contributed by the employer.
Social Security Administration - The federal agency which administers the national social security program.
Social Security Tax - A payroll deduction based on gross wages paid; this amount is matched by the employer as required by the Federal Insurance Contribution Act (FICA).
Union - An organization of workers formed for the purpose of collective bargaining.
Veterans' Administration (VA) - The federal agency which administers a system of benefits for veterans and their dependents.
