Enbrel Attorneys
Enbrel (also known by its generic name, etanercept)
is a medication approved by the FDA in April 2004 for the treatment of
moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and in January 2002 for the treatment
of psoriatic arthritis. It is also approved for treating rheumatoid arthritis,
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis affecting
the spine).
Enbrel has been on the market since 1998 and has been used by hundreds
of thousands of patients so more is known about its safety and its side
effects than is known about some of the newer biologic medications.
In May 1999, the FDA issued a new warning for Enbrel. They advised that
new reports indicate that certain patients receiving Enbrel have developed
serious infections, including sepsis, and that several of these patients
have died from their infections. Since the drug's approval, 30 of the
estimated 25,000 patients treated with Enbrel are reported to have developed
serious infections, including sepsis. Six of these patients died within
two to sixteen weeks after starting treatment. A number of these RA patients
had a history of chronic or recurrent infections, pre-existing infections,
diabetes, or other conditions that predisposed them to infections.
