Listeria Monocytogenes
Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, a serious infectious disease
for pregnant women, newborns and adults with a weakened immune system.
It is mainly found in soil and water but it has also been found in cheese,
raw milk, improperly processed ice cream, raw and undercooked meat, poultry
and seafood, and raw, leafy vegetables.
In pregnant women, miscarriages, fetal death, and severe illness or death
of a newborn infant can result from Listeria. Older adults and those with
weakened immune systems are at risk for meningitis, severe illness and
death.
