Foodborne Illness Attorneys

Foodborne illnesses are caused by organisms or harmful chemicals in the food we eat and drink. Most of these illnesses are caused when certain bacteria, viruses or parasites contaminate food. Others occur when food is contaminated by harmful chemicals or toxins.

Foodborne illness often shows itself as flu-like symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever, so many people may not recognize that the illness is caused by bacteria or other pathogens on food. The onset of symptoms may not occur for two or more days after the contaminated food was eaten.
Bacteria that cause disease are called "pathogens" which can cause foodborne illness. Most cases of foodborne illness can be prevented by proper cooking and processing of food destroys bacteria.

The most common foodborne illnesses are:

  • Campylobacter
  • Salmonella
  • E. coli O157:H7
  • Listeria monocytogenes
  • Calicivirus, Norwalk, or Noroviru

Some common diseases are occasionally foodborne, even though they are usually transmitted by other routes.
    These include infections caused by:

  • Shigella
  • Hepatitis A
  • Giardia
  • Clostridium botulinum
  • Cryptosporidia
  • Also even Strep throat has been transmitted occasionally through food.

Other toxins and poisonous chemicals can cause foodborne illness. People can become ill if a pesticide is inadvertently added to a food, or if naturally poisonous substances are used to prepare a meal. Every year, people become ill after mistaking poisonous mushrooms for safe species, or after eating poisonous reef fishes.
