Ketek Attorneys
Ketek® is a prescription antibiotic drug made by
Aventis Pharmaceuticals and known generically as telithromycin. Ketek
is in a class of drugs called ketolide antibiotics, and is used to treat
bacterial infections in the lungs and sinuses.
On January 20, 2006 the Annals of Internal Medicine made available online
an "early" release version of a report that described three
cases of liver problems associated with the antibiotic Ketek (telithromycin).
On the same day the FDA issued an email MedWatch Alert concerning Ketek
and its possible association with serious liver problems. Three people
have suffered severe liver damage as a result of taking Ketek. All three
developed jaundice - yellowing of the eyes and skin - and abnormal blood
tests indicated diminished liver function. One of the three recovered,
one required a liver transplant and the third person died.
The symptoms of possible serious liver problems are:
Pruritus (itchy skin)
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
Dark urine
Upper right-sided abdominal tenderness (location of the liver)
Unexplained "flu-like" symptoms
