Lariam Attorneys
Lariam is used to treat malaria (a serious infection
that is spread by mosquitoes in certain parts of the world and can cause
death) and to prevent malaria in travelers who visit areas where malaria
is common. Lariam is in a class of medications called antimalarials. It
works by killing the organisms that cause malaria. Lariam was invented
by the U.S. Army and has been highly controversial recently.
Roche pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of the drug Lariam has begun
warning in the drug's official product information about reports of suicide.
Lariam's previous warning label only stated patients should be advised
some people can't take Lariam because of "side effects" and that "if the
patient experiences any symptoms that may affect the patient's ability
to take this drug," they should contact their doctor and might need to
change medication. The manufacturer also advises patients be told mental
problems such as acute anxiety, restlessness, confusion or depression
could signal the start of "a more serious event," and should switch medications
if they experience them. Roche pharmaceuticals internal documents show
that it has received over 3,000 reports of psychiatric problems including
nightmares, depression, hallucinations, psychosis, aggression, and paranoia.
Even more problematic than suffering psychiatric effects are the growing
evidence linking the use of Lariam to neuropsychiatric events. It has
been said that the use of Lariam can cause people to lose their mind and
do things devastatingly bad. In the summer of 2002, more questions were
raised about the deadly and dark effect Lariam could have after a Master
Sergeant and three other Ft. Bragg soldiers were accused of killing their
wives within less than six weeks of one another.
