Lotronex is a prescription drug that waswidely used
to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in women. Lotronex blocks the
action of serotonin the intestines. This slows the movement of stools
(bowel movements) throughout the bowels. Lotronex was a popular drug manufactured
by Glaxo Wellcome in February of 2000. In November of 2000 Glaxo Wellcome
withdrew the drug from the market due to an increasing number of deaths,
surgeries and hospitalizations occuring in people taking this drug.
The use of Lotronex has been associated with serious side effects such
as obstruction, ruptured bowels, inchemic colitis, toxic megacolon and
secondary ischemia, perforation and impaction . In some cases, these complications
have required intestinal surgery. There have been mulitple deaths associated
with the use of this drug.
