Permax was launched in the United States in 1989 for

disease and restless legs syndrome. Parkinson's disease is associated
with low levels of the chemical dopamine found in the brain. Permax has
some of the same effects as dopamine for the body. Permax is aslo used
to treat the stiffness, tremors, spasms, and poor muscle control in people
with Parkinson's disease. Permax is often used along with other medicines
in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
In February 2003, the FDA issued a safety alert for the drug Permax because
of the cardiac valvulopathy involving one or more valves that was being
observed in patients who took Permax. Information regarding heart valve
damage due to the use of Permax were detailed in a report by doctors at
the Mayo Clinic. The evidence is based on three cases at the clinic and
doctors say it is enough to recommend that anyone with heart problems
not take Permax.
