The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified healthcare professionals
and patients that Promethazine HCI (marketed as Phenergan,
Promacot, Promethegan, Promethazine HCI syrup, and generic products),
sold by Wyeth, has been linked to cases of breathing problems (respiratory
depression), some causing death, when the drug was used in children less
than 2 years old.The FDA has also warned the public about giving Phenergan
and generic products to children age 2 and older.
The Food and Drug Administration says seven deaths have been linked to
promethazine hydrochloride in young children. The FDA aslo says it knows
of 22 cases where children have suffered breathing problems after taking
the drug. The medication is sold under the brand name Phenergan and in
various generic versions. Drug labels are being changed to warn people
about the risk.
