Inapsine
Droperidol (Inapsine) is also a classic butyrophenone-class anti-schizophrenic
drug. Chronic administration of this drug can cause reversible extrapyramidal
symptoms (stiffness of movement similar to Parkinson disease) and can
cause irreversible, permanent involuntary movements called tardive dyskinesias.
Droperidol (Inapsine) has also been implicated with inducing "Neuroleptic
Malignant Syndrome" (NMS), characterized by autonomic instability,
fever and generalized muscle rigidity. Estimates of death caused by NMS
run as high as 20%. Estimates of the incidence of NMS caused by neuroleptics
are controversial and span a broad range, from 0.02 to 2% of patients
receiving high dose neuroleptic injection. Droperidol has been known to
cause this reaction for over 16 years. |
