Zicam Side Effects
Zicam does not require a prescription but that doesn't mean
side effects of the drug are mild. Zicam has been shown to cause anosmia, a
potentially permanent condition resulting in the loss of smell and taste. Zicam
may be applied to the nasal cavities either with a spray or swab and Cold-Eeze
is a nasal spray. Cold remedies containing soluble zinc have been argued that
they can cause a loss of smell.
Zicam Cold Remedy contains zinc gluconate. Users of Zicam have filed complaints
that Zicam side effects have left them with permanent loss of smell. In some
instances, the Zicam side effects have occurred after just one use of Zicam
Cold Remedy. These side effects often are irreversible.
Although a Dow Jones Newswire article reported an FDA investigation of reported
Zicam side effects, Zicam's developers, claim to be unaware of an FDA inquiry.
Several lawsuits have been brought against the manufacturers of ZICAM and Cold-Eeze
alleging that they knew or should have known about the potential dangers associated
with the use of nasal medications containing zinc, or that warnings regarding
the side effects should have been placed on the product label. In fact, the
Zicam side effects of anosmia and hyposmia (partial loss of smell) were reported
when soluble zinc was used in an attempt to prevent polio in the 1930s.
If the creators of Zicam were aware of the potential damage from Zicam side
effects and failed to warn consumers, then victims may be entitled to a large
monetary amount in damages. It has also been documented by some medical researchers
that the use of zinc and products containing zinc can result in nerve damage.
